Aggregate Image Measurement System
The shape, angularity, and surface texture of aggregate affect the engineering properties of highway construction materials such as hot mix asphalt concrete, Portland cement concrete, and unbound aggregate layers. Most methods currently used to measure these properties of aggregate particles are indirect measurements of the desired property. The AIMS SOFTWARE© combined with a computer, camera, lighting, and microscope technology comprise the Pine AFA2A Aggregate Image Measurement System (AIMS).
The AIMS provides objective characterization of aggregate shape and angularity and a texture index for particles retained on a 0.075mm (No. 200) sieve through those passing a 37.5mm (1.5”) sieve. This information provides material property values that are useful in the design of pavement structures.
